A note from Norbert's forever caretakers: Norbert came into care from a northern community pound. He was actually surrendered to the pound and was previously adopted from another rescue (that rescue transferred ownership to SCARS). He was terrified of people, the SCARS shelter staff had a hard time getting him out of his kennel run and he was an extreme flight risk. Once the staff was able to touch him, he was moved to us as we have the capability of working with dogs like Norbert. Norbert went to the vet and was shaved in multiple spots due to the severe matting. He had a rash behind his ears and his groin area. Chunks of dried feces woven into his fur. And to top it all off, he also needed bilateral entropion surgery on both of his eyes. So not only was Norbert a pretty severe behavioural case, he also turned into a medical case. We have been working with Norbert since mid-November. He has shown us that he is an extreme flight risk and given the opportunity he will run away and absolutely never look back. Luckily, we are fully fenced and have airlocks and numerous safety measures around our facility. We have bought him a GPS collar to give us a fighting chance if he ever does manage to escape. He is learning that people can be good and that we are here to work with him and to help him. He allows us to leash him when he is in his kennel run. He has recently graduated to a larger outside space, about 40x20, and no longer has to drag a long line in it. He typically hides in his dog house unless there are no people around. Inside the kennel he is still pretty nervous and learning about confined spaces. He hasn't mastered house training yet, actually he knows nothing of the sort, but we are working with him to understand what is expected of him. This boy has a long, long way to go, but I know we will get him to a point where he thrives and can live his best life here. He deserves a fighting chance and I think we have the knowledge and ability to get him there. Due to his unadoptability, Norbert is now a SCARS sanctuary animal.

I'm a Sanctuary Animal

What's a sanctuary animal? Sanctuary animals are permanent wards of SCARS due to medical conditions or behavioral issues and we are not likely to ever find an adoptive family. SCARS is committed to giving these animals a home and the love, care and attention they deserve! We house them at our two main intake facilities. We look to businesses to sponsor Sanctuary Animals to help us offset the cost of housing them. Click here learn more about our Sanctuary Animals
Please note: If other cats/dogs in your home are not spayed/neutered, we may deny your application. SCARS exists due to lack of spaying/neutering and it is our goal to end this cycle. If there is a documented medical reason for your animal to not be spayed/neutered, we will work with you.
