Sept 15 update – Update on Smokey the 2nd. We have the most hopeful news to share about Smokey , our sweet female dog who arrived emaciated and covered in quills , with injuries that had sadly been left untreated . When she first came into our care, the quills had already caused severe damage to her face , and tragically, she ended up losing one eye . But today, Smokey is ready to leave the vet clinic and head into a foster home . We are absolutely thrilled for her! She is already showing everyone how sweet, calm, and full of gratitude she is. What’s next for Smokey: She will need another surgery to remove more quills, but for now her most important step is gaining strength and putting on weight . In her foster home, she’ll begin healing in the comfort and safety she deserves.

Sept 11/26 – Urgent Medical case
Smokey is a young, very sweet pup who we believe tried to make friends with a porcupine . Unfortunately, the quills weren’t removed quickly enough, and they’ve caused a lot of damage, especially to her face , including her eye , as well as her legs and chest .
What we’re facing: Smokey will likely lose her one eye . Although quills were pulled, there are still many quills that cannot be removed yet because of severe swelling and some that have broken off inside .
The remaining quills may require surgical removal , and some may migrate out over time.
During recovery, we have to carefully monitor her one good eye to make sure nothing migrates into it.
On top of the injuries, Smokey is also emaciated and dehydrated , and she needs urgent, intensive care to get through this.
Porcupine quills are very common , and in fact, they are one of our most extensive medical cases, but Smokey deserves a real chance to heal.
