Rufus was a Westlock area stray that had been hit by car. Some nice people found him on the highway and brought him in the Westlock Veterinary Center for care on January 31, where he then became a SCARS dog!

He’s healing from bruising in his lungs, a tear in his windpipe, a suspected collapsed lung, and multiple wounds. Right now he’s on three medications and his only job is to rest, feel safe, and recover. And somehow… through all of that… he is the gentlest, calmest little soul.

He is one of those rare dogs who feels like an old soul. He doesn’t fuss, doesn’t demand, doesn’t make a scene. He just quietly settles in, lies nearby, and is content simply being close to his people. It’s like he understands everything without needing words.

He still prefers the floor over a bed, but he’s slowly learning that soft beds are safe and comfortable. You can almost see him thinking it through. He loves being outside and will just lie there watching the birds, completely peaceful. No interest in toys right now — his energy is soft, steady, and wise beyond his years.

Gentle pets on the top of his head are his absolute favourite — he even cries for that first “good morning” head scratch. The way he leans into kindness is something I can’t explain… just pure gratitude.

He loves treats (especially beef and kangaroo flavours), but more than anything, he just wants to feel safe and close. He’s not clingy, not demanding — just quietly present. A soft, peaceful companion.

He has also been wonderful with our other dogs and our cat. Calm, respectful, and so easygoing.

He truly feels like an old man in a little dog body — an old, gentle spirit who’s just looking for a safe place to land while he heals we are so thankful to be spending our time with him.
