September 22/21
I am so scared. The pain is excruciating and I can’t walk. That scares me the most – I am a 4-month-old puppy and I can’t put any weight on my back legs. I was playing. I don’t know exactly what happened. I didn’t even see the car coming, until it hit me. SCARS runs a Spay and Neuter program in my community. A witness to the accident called the SCARS intake team. I am on route to care. They say they will help me. They say there is a whole community of wonderful people who will wrap their arms around me and get me through this. If you are one of those wonderful people please consider donating to my care through Canada Helps on the SCARS website: www.scarscare.ca/donate/. They gave me a name, I am Little Tyke and I am going to need all the help I can get.
Sept. 23 Little Tyke update. I am a little less scared and there is a lot less pain. These people are wonderful. I had a long ride in a car to get to the vet clinic. Everyone has been so kind and gentle with me, so caring and understanding of my pain (I got great pain meds for that in case you were wondering). They use big words here – bilateral fracture of my femur. In simple dog terms it means the big bones in both my back legs are broken and have to be put back together with metal plates. This is a big surgery, so I am heading to the specialist to get the care I need. I am so lucky that SCARS exists and they have so many amazing supporters. Without you all, my future would look pretty grim but because of SCARS. Today, I have hope.
Sept 25 update… Wow. All I can say is, Wow! From lying in a ditch unable to walk all the way to recovery from major surgery the last day or so of my life has been a blur. I am less scared now because people are so nice and kind to me. I’m still a little dazed and confused about everything that has happened, but I’m mostly just so darn grateful that I seem to be able to make my legs work again. Not walking yet, but I have movement. It was a big surgery – metal plates and screws to put the bones in both legs back together. My surgeon is pleased with how everything went.
I have big hurdles in front of me though. The severity of my injury will require lots of physio. There is a potential complication in puppies with femur fractures called quadriceps contracture (these people use such big words all the time for a small pup like me). What it means in simple dog is my big leg muscle potentially could heal right onto the big leg bones they just fixed. This would be a devastating complication that could greatly impact my mobility and quality of life. I don’t want that to happen. This is where the physio therapy part comes I absolutely have to follow the instructions. Well that means my wonderful foster home will follow the instructions and I will happily participate. I am all for anything that gets me running and playing again. How can you help? Glad you asked! The best way would be to make a donation to SCARS. Any contribution to injured animals like myself would be greatly appreciated. Donations make a life and death difference to animals like myself. Thanks so much you SCARS people are the best.
September 29…. Hi everyone, Little Tyke here. I thought you would like to hear my happy update. It isn’t super graceful, but I am able to walk. I am so excited and so relieved. I am in a wonderful foster home, now. There is a lot of responsibility when you take on a foster with medical needs like me. They are dedicated and patient. I need physio four times a day. There are specific exercises to ensure a full range of motion and to build back my muscle strength and coordination. Physio is not that bad, I sort of cooperate… it involves a lot of treats. They have to carry me if there are stairs and keep my other activity very controlled. There is still a long road ahead, but right now things are looking pretty positive. I will keep you posted.
Oct. 26 update… Hello everyone! Little Tyke here! I know you’ve been wondering about me, how could you not? I’m adorable! I’m sure you remember I came in to SCARS care after being hit by a car and breaking both back legs. I’ll tell you, it has been tough. I had a setback and had to go for a second surgery on one of my legs. My foster mom says I’m a little trooper. Even after all that’s happened, I’m still a happy bouncy girl. Though I’m not allowed to be bouncy for a while yet, I keep trying. Foster mom set me up in a nice soft, warm kennel and I get so many chew toys! I try really hard to be patient while doing my physiotherapy but it’s not my favourite activity event though there’s treats. Thanks to people like you I get a second chance at being the best I can be! I’m not quite ready to leave here yet but I will be soon, keep an eye out!
Nov 3 update on Little Tyke!
I’m Little Tyke, but my foster family calls me Goose. I came in to SCARS care with two broken legs. I’m still in the healing process so I’m looking for a home that will keep me quiet and contained to a small area at least until the doctors say I’m okay. I will need more x-rays to make sure the bones are healing properly. This is all very hard for a puppy to take, I am a bundle of energy and have a tough time sitting around all day! I like to be where you are all the time. I do really well in my kennel, I will stay there all night without complaint. I am a bit of a chatty girl, especially when I see you first thing in the morning! I love everyone I meet and think everyone should pay attention to only me! I know I’m a little high maintenance but I promise you all the love and kisses you can handle! To learn more about me visit my profile: https://adopt.scarscare.ca/view-animal/?scars_id=44922762
