Drifter needed to go back to Westlock Veterinary emergency for fluid build up in the incision.
November 28, 2023 Update
Check out this video of Drifter! This is huge strides. A tail wag, excitement, and a friendly smile to greet foster mom in the morning. Drifter has been through a lot. His leg and shoulder were so broken, that they had to remove them – leaving him with quite the incision. It’s taken 5 days for him to finally wag his tail again out of excitement to see someone. It’s taken 5 days for him to have the courage to walk out of the crate into this new scary foster house. It’s taken him 5 days for him to eat a treat out of the foster parents hands. He’s learning to gain trust. He’s learning to gain strength.

Drifter’s spot of choice is a corner with all the shoes to nap on, he’s enjoying resting and recovering from his leg amputation surgery and so far he’s great with kids/cats/dogs. His recovery is going to be a long one but we are so happy he’s apart of our SCARS Adoptable Family.
November 22, 2023 Update
I had a long day yesterday. After careful consultation, the decision was made to amputate my leg. There was just no way to fix it.
I am okay with the decision, I couldn’t use it anymore. I am pretty tired today. A lot has happened in my life in the last few days. Rescue, transport, hospitalization, surgery, and now learning to walk on 3 legs. My new SCARS friend came and sat with me today. She said it is all going to get better from here. You know what? I believe her. I am terribly thin, but room service here at Westlock Veterinary Center is superb.
My surgery site hurts, but the pain meds manage that just fine. I am a bit scared still, but there are soft, calm voices and gentle hands helping my spirit heal.
There are so many more, like me waiting for their chance. Please consider adoption. Please support one of our fundraisers. So many lives are depending on your help. Thank you to everyone who, through their generosity, has forever changed my life for the better.

Sigh. 😔
Where do I start my story?
Let’s skip the part about being injured and my life before that.
Let’s start where the good began to happen. ❤️
Injured and in pain, I dragged myself to where the people live. Surely someone will see my need. It is late and dark when I get there. No one is around. I am exhausted and can go no further. I see an old towel on the ground by a building. With fear in my heart, I curl up in a tight ball against the cold of the night air. Fighting against the pain, I wait for the morning light.
No one stops right away. Stray dogs are a common sight here. Eventually, an RCMP officer makes me their business. To serve and protect extends to animals as well as people. They see my plight and know I will not survive without great care. The call goes out to the SCARS intake team…..we know you are beyond capacity, we know we are hours of driving away, we know this is a huge ask, but please will you make room for him? We called him Drifter, he will perish without your help.
My whole world changed when the answer was yes. 🥹
Hours of driving. Different drivers meeting to continue the journey. Calm voices, kind words, warmth, and care. I finally arrived at the Westlock Veterinary Center. IV fluids, pain meds, and x-rays. My leg is badly broken. It will likely be an amputation, but that is alright. I am safe and resting, and I have hope. Hope because this amazing SCARS community continues to come together and give so many like me their second chances.
