July 29/26 – Our sweet Queenie girl 
In 2015 — fourteen dogs were rescued from a hoarding situation. Among those dogs was a scared female we named Queenie. She came to the Athabasca facility with her buddy who we named Quin. These dogs were terrified and had only known living in a house full of other dogs with limited people interactions. Queenies face was covered in scars that we assume she got from fighting for food or from being picked on by others. Under those scars we only saw the sweet face of a girl needing someone to give her a chance. It took months to earn their trust. We spent many hours working with the pair to form a bond and show them how to do something as simple as walk on a leash. Success was achieved! They loved us but only us. The decision was made to have them join the sanctuary program. Queenie loved her walks! She also loved to yell at anyone who dared to come into her yard. Even as she got older she could still be found giving strangers an earful. As the years went by the couple grew old together enjoying their walks and sleeping inside on their big comfy beds. Queenie was very special to all of the staff at the Athabasca facility and especially her life long friend Quin. When you are caretakers for an animal for over 10 years you see them as one of your own family. Sadly Queenie developed a mass that grew very large over time. It was inoperable but she was still happy, eating and full of life. Over the last few months she began to limp from arthritis. We managed her pain but it was clear she was struggling to get around. We made the painful decision to let her go. We are all feeling the heartache of losing her and will for a long time. SCARS gave her the best life we could full of love, treats, pets and a place to be her quirky self. A big thank you to the kind souls who were Queenies sponsor — Rob & Deb Litviak.
