In late March 2026, we were contacted by someone who had just purchased a rural property. The previous owners had mentioned they were leaving behind “a few barn cats.” When the new owners counted 11 cats, they knew this would become a much bigger problem very quickly.
They reached out to every rescue and animal service they could find, but because of the remote location, travel time, fuel costs, the need for holding kennels, and the commitment required for trapping, no one was able to step in.
We knew it would be a huge undertaking, but we also knew we couldn’t say no. Not when leaving them meant even more kittens being born and this cycle continuing.
The reality of this rescue:
And the most heartbreaking part? Some of these cats were incredibly friendly. They leaned into pets, wanted affection, and were so happy to receive love.
They were not feral. They were abandoned.
Please, do not leave your cats behind when you move. If you chose to bring them into your life, they are your responsibility. Rescue is already in crisis because of the overwhelming number of unwanted cats.
Be a responsible pet owner.
Spay and neuter your cats.
(Huge thank you to one of our awesome volunteers Vera, who goes above and beyond for these animals.)
