Kevin was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. He got a little too close to a mother dog and her newborn puppies, and sadly she attacked him and badly broke his leg and left puncture wounds that got infected.
Because of the significant soft tissue damage and infection, when he went in for surgery the fracture was repaired with an intramedullary pin tied to an external fixator. This means he has some metal hardware that is in the bone but comes out through the skin and is attached to rigid clamps and rods. The reason for this was due to the risk of infection potentially affecting the implants as they will eventually need to be removed and have less long term risk for infection than a bone plate. Just means this little guy needs a little more care and attention while healing!
